How to split a tip between people

  1. Calculate the tip on the full bill total.
  2. Add the tip to the bill for the total amount.
  3. Divide by the number of people.

Example: $120 bill, 20% tip, 4 people.
Tip = $24. Total = $144. Each person pays: $144 ÷ 4 = $36.

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15% is the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard, and 20–25% is for excellent service.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are acceptable. Most people in the US tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the total (including tax) is also common and slightly more generous.
